Early years
José Miguel showed his dedication and love for the sport of soccer at a young age – he joined Deportes Concepcion youth soccer program in the city of Concepcion, Chile – 1,100 miles away from home, aged just 14.
Within two years, he became the captain and top scorer of Deportes Concepcion’s U-17 squad and was considered one of the club’s rising stars.
As college player
José Miguel accepted a full soccer scholarship at Robert Morris University (Illinois) in 2002—he scored 23 goals and had 24 assists in two seasons with the RMU Eagles. In 2004, José Miguel transferred to the University of Illinois at Springfield. At UIS, he scored 8 goals and had 9 assists in 21 games played.
José Miguel finished his college soccer career with a total of 32 goals and 33 assists, receiving a number of accolades at the conference, regional and national level.
As soccer trainer & coach
After college graduation, José Miguel began working with soccer organizations and competitive soccer players in Chicago and Central Illinois as a coach and trainer. He also spent 4 years working as a scout and mediator for Liga MX clubs (Mexico’s top professional soccer league), as well as professional soccer clubs in Eastern Europe and Asia.
José Miguel was the Head Coach of the boys and girls soccer program at Catalyst Maria High School, located in Chicago’s south side between 2018-2021. In this role, he was recognized as the winner of the 2019 SportsEngine TrueSport Champion Coach Recognition Award.
